We started Orthogonalix because frankly, we saw too many tech companies getting burned by lawyers who didn't actually understand their business. Back in 2012, our founding partners were working at different big firms and kept running into the same problem - brilliant startups making avoidable legal mistakes because traditional corporate law wasn't keeping up with the pace of innovation.
It's been quite a ride since we opened our doors. What started as three lawyers and a shared office space has grown into something we're genuinely proud of - not because we're the biggest, but because we've stayed true to what we set out to do.
Three corporate lawyers left their big law jobs to start something different. We set up shop in a tiny office on King Street and took on our first client - a fintech startup that couldn't afford the rates at our old firms.
Word got around. We added our first associate attorneys and moved to Bay Street. Started getting calls from VCs asking for referrals, which felt pretty validating honestly.
Closed our first major M&A deal - $45M acquisition that took 9 months of intense work. Added employment law and privacy compliance to our services because clients kept asking for help with those areas.
We're a team of 15 now, working with everyone from scrappy startups to established tech companies. Still in Toronto, still focused on doing right by our clients without the corporate law firm nonsense.
Look, we're not gonna pretend to be some revolutionary force in law. But we do things a bit differently and our clients seem to appreciate it.
No legal jargon unless it's actually necessary. You'll understand what's happening with your case because we'll explain it like humans.
We actually get how your business works. Whether it's SaaS licensing or data privacy regulations, we speak your language.
When you email us, you'll hear back same day. Sometimes within the hour. We know you can't wait three days for an answer when deals are moving.
The people who'll actually be working on your stuff
Managing Partner
Sarah's the one who had the crazy idea to start this place. She spent 8 years at Osler before deciding BigLaw wasn't for her. She's closed over 60 M&A deals and somehow still finds corporate law exciting.
Partner, Technology Law
Marcus was a software developer before law school, which makes him weirdly qualified for tech law. He's the guy you want when dealing with licensing agreements or patent issues.
Partner, Privacy & Compliance
Aisha joined us in 2016 and made partner in 2020. She's become our go-to for anything related to data privacy, and she's saved more than a few clients from regulatory headaches.
Senior Associate
David handles most of our employment law matters and contract negotiations. He's got a talent for finding creative solutions to sticky workplace situations.
Associate
Jennifer's our newest associate and she's already handling incorporation work and corporate governance matters like she's been doing it for years. Startups love working with her.
Senior Associate
Michael's been with us since 2017 and he's probably drafted more commercial agreements than anyone else in the firm. He's meticulous but doesn't let perfect be the enemy of done.
